More than
half of the year 2002 has passed, yet some things don't seem to
change. The Renters' Rights forces are gearing up for the November
2002 Election in Santa Monica, seeking to pass a new Rent Control
Law, defeat VERITAS, defeat SMRPH. The Historic District controversy
continues which is another attempt to restrict and control property
owners. In Sacramento, Sheila Kuehl and other legislators are
seeking to pass more laws that are not to the advantage of the
property owner.
ACTION, however, is going strong and continues with our monthly
meetings having enjoyed more attendance and interesting speakers
on current topics of interest to the membership at each and every
meeting. Our last fundraiser was a successful and enjoyable event
and I believe our upcoming fundraiser, our Barbeque
and Boat Ride Event set for September 21, 2002, will also
be well attended and enjoyable. Our fundraisers allow your organization
to grow and service your needs. Your annual dues are simply not
enough to support the various activities of ACTION. Remember,
ACTION is really the only organization truly dedicated to the
needs of the Santa Monica property owners and your support is
requested and required for us to help you.
Further details for all of the aforementioned items will be found
in the magazine and discussed at our monthly meetings. I am particularly
pleased to announce that our speaker for the September 9, 2002
meeting will be the Honorable Robert Thomas, Superior Court Judge
(Retired) who should provide us with a worthwhile and interesting
meeting. Judge Thomas is a very thoughtful and respected Jurist.
There will be other guest speakers as well.
By now you should be aware that the City of Santa Monica is contemplating
changing the Santa Monica Rent Control Law, obviously not to the
advantage of the property owner, in several respects. For details
on the proposed changes, read WAM.
I look forward
to seeing you at the next meeting and, of course, we invite you
to bring a friend.
