SANTA MONICA DIARY, By Wes Wellman, Action President

In a bid to gain the support of the Italian equivalent of the Religious Right, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has pledged to have no sex until the April 9 elections. Now if only Italy’s Catholic priests will make the same pledge.

In a show of support, former U.S. president Bill Clinton agreed that, until the election in Italy, he would not be intimate with Hillary.

Another story, making the rounds, reports that Al Gore claims to have invented Celibacy. If only his father had practiced it....

Improving your smile is getting easier. Sparkling white veneers can cap almost any set of teeth with realistic looking perfection. Veneers now come in three sizes: small, medium and Kennedy’s.

Although Santa Monica has fired the director of the city owned Woodlawn Cemetery, he is appealing his dismissal to the Personnel Board. In the interim the cemetery is being run by a skeleton crew.

Struggling with whether to permit high school seniors who have completed the 12th grade but not passed the state-mandated high school exit exam to march in graduation exercises, the Santa Monica School board has decided to allow them to march in the graduation ceremony but to list them in the program as “graduation candidates” rather than graduates. I like that thinking, as by that logic, I’m a billionaire candidate.

Santa Monica has contracted for two port-a-potties, at a cost of $465 per month, outside Bourget Brothers to accommodate day laborers that congregate there. At about 9 square feet each, that amounts to a rental rate of approximately $26 dollars a square foot; or about twelve time rental housing market rates in the area. Could the next real estate boom be port-a-pottie conversions?

If a port-a-pottie rents for $26 dollars a square foot at 11th and Olympic, think what one could bring North of Wilshire or with an ocean view.

Jon Hodge, Santa Monica College’s planetarium director has died of cancer at age 57. He was known for making complex subjects understandable. I had a doctor friend like that at one time. He and I lived for a while in the same high-rise. I remember him being called by a frantic mutual friend in the building to examine her sister who wasn’t responding.
He went right up and responded, “She’s dead as a door nail.”

The mission at San Juan Capistrano is being fumigated. What could be lost in the discussion is that the structure it is still standing after 229 years. This shows that buildings built in the 1950s, like many of ours, either don’t need to be fumigated for another 179 years or that God provides his own buildings with a form of divine pest control protection; but with only a 229-year warranty.
